Understanding Roller Thrust Bearing and its varied kinds

With the invention of machines and gadgets, life of mankind became much easier and convenient as compared to the previous times when most activities were done manually. Efforts from human beings have become lesser now and much time can also be saved in the process. Productivity can be increased this way by multi-tasking at the same time with the help of these machineries.

But how do these machines get made? Are there any important elements without which these pieces of equipment cannot operate smoothly? Answers to such questions can lead us to realizing the significance of the product called bearings. These vital parts of any machinery help in the effective use of the machine through ways which would be overlooked by anyone who is unaware of such concepts.

Deciphering a Thrust Roller Bearing

Bearings are typically those unavoidable elements with the help of which any machinery is constructed. They connect two or more parts located on the inside of the machine and help in the rotation of these parts by reducing friction between the same. Such a process helps in the smooth functioning of the overall equipment as the internal lubrication is the main task of these important parts called the bearings.

Bearings are majorly classified as ball bearings and roller bearings. Tiny balls form the rolling elements in a ball bearing while small cylindrical rollers constitute a roller bearing commonly. These rolling elements are placed between two raceways which help in the movement of these rollers allowing the rotation of the adjoining parts of the machinery. There are cases in which the movement of these rollers is restricted as well.

The bearings in which the rolling elements are caged between the inner and outer raceways, limiting their movements, are called as thrust bearings. Such a feature seen in a roller bearing gives it the name of a thrust roller bearing. This structural formation lets the bearing to accommodate heavier axial loads due to the higher degree of stiffness found in the same.

Specialty of Spherical Roller Thrust Bearing

A thrust roller bearing can be further classified into three major types. They are called cylindrical roller thrust bearings, tapered roller thrust bearings and spherical roller thrust bearings. Out of these, the spherical roller thrust bearing is designed in such a way that it can take both the loads- radial and axial, as opposed to the cylindrical roller thrust bearings, wherein only axial loads can be facilitated. Angular misalignment is permitted by this kind of a roller thrust bearing which is not a common feature among the other types of thrust bearings. They are mainly used in water turbines, gearboxes, cranes, swing bridges, etc.
